by Lisa Mason on June 11, 2010

A vacation trip to Zion National Park can be one of the most exciting family vacations you’ve ever had the pleasure to enjoy. However, traveling with a child who has a disability can make getting to and from your destination a bit difficult when traveling by plane.

It doesn’t matter what type of disability your child has, it can be a real challenge to fly to your Zion vacation. With all of the security changes that have taken place over the past several years, it can be a real hassle boarding a plane.

You must go through all the security check points and everything you have with you needs to be examined. This is done purely for your safety and everyone else on board the plane but it can still be a very big hassle.

It doesn’t matter if your child has a mental disability or a physical one, preparation can make the trip easier and more pleasant for everyone and the following information can help.

Tips for traveling with disabilities on a plane trip to Zion:

  • If your child is in a wheelchair, they will most likely be patted down by the security guard and the wheelchair will be inspected. This process will go much smoother if you get your child use the procedure at home before you plan to leave. Perform the same searches several times so your child will become familiar with it and they won’t be frightened when at the airport.
  • Pack a carry-on bag for your child that has their favorite toys, games, food or anything else that helps to keep them calm provided it will pass through security.
  • Inform the security officer immediately of your child’s condition and special needs and tell them up front if you think the child might get upset during the security check.
  • Don’t be afraid to offer suggestions to security that can make the process go smoother.

It’s important to know that your child will not be separated from you at any time during the screening process and, if for any reason, a private screening is required, you’ll escort and stay with your child the whole time.

Traveling with disabilities anytime can be a challenge but doing so by plane can be even more difficult. Plan ahead and arrive early because being delayed is a real possibility. Using these tips can help you get prepared so you can have a more pleasant and fun family vacation at Zion National Park.
